Mission Baskets

Types of Mission Baskets: coiled gathering and storage baskets, bowls and trays. Mission basket materials include sumac and squawbush. The frequent use of juncus, a type of rush, is a characteristic feature of Mission baskets, giving them a warm golden color.

The term "Mission" refers to a number of distinct Southern California peoples that came under the influence of Spanish missions built there in the latter part of the 18th century. Some individual designations were Luiseno, Diegueno, Gabrieleno and Cahuilla.
