San Juan Pueblo is located approximately 25 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In prehistoric and early historic times the Pueblo was a powerful center of Pueblo culture. Its modern population is nearly seven thousand members, making it one of the largest Pueblos.
San Juan's pottery revival began in the 1930s and was characterized by polished redware, often deeply carved or with a matte tan-colored field surrounding the body. While a good deal of San Juan pottery still carries these features, contemporary potters are branching off into many innovative directions.
